Frequently Asked Questions

Known Game Issues

These issues and others are currently being worked on. We appreciate your patience while we work to improve the game.

Skull King disappearing from Bone Bottom

If the Skull King invades Bone Bottom and the player then leaves the area or dies, the Skull King may not be present when re-entering the area. This creates an issue where Bone Bottom's NPCs, shop and wishwall remain inactive.

This issue has now been patched on all platforms. Please make sure to update your game to the latest version.

Slab escape battle permanent cloakless

In the final battle of the Slab escape sequence, if a player dies while dealing a killing blow during the final wave, they will respawn without their cloak. As the battle is now considered complete they will not be able to regain it.

Temporary solution console: Players can consider using the Auto Save sub-menu in the Select Profile menu to roll-back to the 'Caged' auto save. Note: This will require replaying the Slab escape sequence. Please see below for further details on auto saves.

Temporary solution Steam/GOG: A fix is now available on the public-beta branch. Players can consider switching over temporarily, entering the game and saving to restore their cloak.

This issue has now been patched on all platforms. Please make sure to update your game to the latest version.

Quick-Map soft-lock

In rare cases, when quick-mapping, players can become stuck in place.

Temporary solution: Please use the Save and Quit function from the pause menu to exit the game and return.

This issue has now been patched on all platforms. Please make sure to update your game to the latest version.

Lace tool deflect soft-lock

Throwing a tool at Lace while re-commencing the battle in Deep Docks can cause a loss of player control.

Temporary solution: Please use the Save and Quit function from the pause menu to exit the game and return.

This issue has now been patched on all platforms. Please make sure to update your game to the latest version.

Chapel of the Reaper battle soft-lock

In rare cases, a Silk Snipper enemy can become stuck out of bounds preventing progress.

Temporary solution: Please use the Save and Quit function from the pause menu to exit the game and return.

This issue has now been reduced on all platforms. Please make sure to update your game to the latest version.

Controller Detection Issues

Some PC players have reported issues with various controllers not being detected or functioning strangely when connected. We will work to investigate and resolve these issues.

Beast in the Bells Soft-lock

If the Beast in the Bells main task is acquired at the Bilewater Bellway, players will not be able to enter the Bellway as intended.

Temporary solution Console: Players can consider using the Auto Save sub-menu in the Select Profile menu to roll-back to their most recent auto save.

Temporary solution Steam/GOG: A fix is now available in the public-beta branch. Players can consider switching temporarily to the public-beta version to complete the quest.

This issue has now been patched on all platforms. Please make sure to update your game to the latest version.

Late Game Stuck Cursed

If players accept the Rite of Rebirth wish during the late game and have previously visited Benjin & Crull, they will be unable to acquire a critical item for the associated quest Infestation Operation. This will result in the player being stuck permanently in the cursed state.

This issue has now been patched on all platforms. Please make sure to update your game to the latest version.

I am stuck/my save file is broken!

An auto save function exists in the Select Profile screen of the main menu (highlighted below). Auto saves are created at certain key points in the game. Pressing this button will bring up a list of auto saves that can be selected from. NOTE: Reverting to a previous auto save will overwrite your current save file.

PC Save File Locations

  • Windows: %USERPROFILE%/AppData/LocalLow/Team Cherry/Hollow Knight Silksong/

  • Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/unity.Team-Cherry.Silksong/

  • Linux: ~/.config/unity3d/Team Cherry/Hollow Knight Silksong/

For Steam, each user’s save files will be in a sub-folder of their Steam user ID. For non-Steam builds, save files will be in a default sub-folder.

Error Message: Save could not be written.

In most cases, this is due to virus protection preventing the game from writing the save file. Please try adding an exception to the folder above in “PC Save File Locations”.

Please also make sure your storage drive is not full.

Why does my save file say “Version Incompatible”?

This message appears if your save file has been opened in a newer version of the game that has added data not present in your current, older version. These newer save files can not be opened in older versions to prevent bugs and data loss.

Cutscenes are not playing, and show a black screen.

We are aware of an issue where some players on Windows can not view cutscenes. This appears to be caused by missing components in your Windows installation that are required to play the video files. In this case, the following will appear in your Player.log file:

Initializing Microsoft Media Foundation failed. It seems that the Microsoft Media Foundation is not installed on this machine or a newer version of Microsoft Media Foundation is required. To install the necessary libraries please install the Media Feature Pack from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/search/result.aspx?q=Media+Feature+Pack for your version of Windows.

The instruction above may not work if you are using an alternative version of Windows, such as Tiny11. If that is the case, there may be an alternative method of installing the required Windows features.
